Sketch of the quayside with sound sources

THE HISTORY OF HEARING

VOID Projects logo

This was a sound installation made for the quayside in Exeter Devon as part of the Wrights and Sites ‘Quay Thing’ festival, funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England.

It was made in collaboration with a group of elderly people with learning difficulties from the Exeter Age Concern. Recordings of the elderly people singing and speaking their memories were sited along a riverside walk, a place busy with passers-by and river traffic.

The various recordings were made to be heard only in snatches and combined with both other 'found' sounds repositioned from around the quay and the sounds generated in the area.
