For both performance and architecture the creation of meaning, and even the existence of the space or artwork, is increasingly dependant on the viewer. What happens when the usual constraints - gravity, weather - are replaced by different ones - timelag, rendering quality?

Our work in digital writing and hypertextual narratives has led us into the new frontiers of virtual worlds. This is a new artform, but often imitating the familiar - in Second Life, houses tend to look like typical American suburbs, theatres like normal real ones, even though there is no restriction, or even any need for their existence.

Some Recollections... will be taking Kafka's Metamorphosis as its starting point, creating a series of environments and experiences to explore the story from the perspectives of all the characters involved in it. This is a hypothetical idea we have had for a long, trapped by the impossibility of realising it in real life. The virtual world of Second Life may be the ideal place finally to realise it.

This is a first stage proposal, to develop a 'building/scene' and associated 'performance/event' within Second Life. The place of writing/storytelling will also be central to this. From this we intend to obtain feedback with a view to developing a second stage response, and as a basis for a future conference paper.

We will post locations, addresses and contact details for this project as it develops.
